Going Local Can Help You Find Your Ikigai

Yesterday, I attended a symposium in our town, and Kazumasa Sashide, the editor in chief of a famous magazine called Sotokoto spoke there.

Sotokoto features many projects happening in small rural towns and villages across Japan. Kazumasa Sashide is the author of a book called Bokura Wa Chiho De Shiawase Wo Mitsukeru, We Find Our Happiness in the Countryside, as well. He depicts many cases of young people moving to the countryside and finding their Ikigais.

I think it is true that people can find their place in small towns more easily than in big cities, and it is such a waste of talent to be buried under the crowd when it can be useful in smaller-scale communities.

Now, especially with the coronavirus pandemic, it is so much nicer to live in the countryside, I think more people will move to the countryside.

I hope Hino Town can cater to more people moving in and find their Ikigais. Local Network Hino is the hub for newcomers and we match them with the locals. We have a regular organic market, a local zoom cafe, a traditional Japanese house renovation project, a natural parenting group, a terraced rice field renewal project, and an organic school lunch promotion committee. It is getting more like a transition initiative, having many working groups now. We made our website, too.
