Ichibutsu Zentai Shoku: Japanese Bio-Hacking

I have completed the 19th week of my Hare and Ke intermittent fasting with Nordic walking. This week I even did one day 24 hours fast. I feel great.

I have been talking about bio-harmonizing, which is Japanese bio-hacking, or the Ikigai Diet style bio-hacking, or I could even say Shizenha style bio-hacking.

I have been talking about how being natural is the key.

More and more, I see people in the field of bio-hacking shifting to a little bizarre world. I don’t think it is happening with everybody and there are some decent practices left in the field, yet, there seem to be too many people going in a different direction to the point that it is affecting the entire culture. The problem is, although an act looks weird in the beginning, once it gains certain popularity, many people start accepting it as a new trend, and businesses jump in seeing the opportunity, and soon or later it becomes standard practice. People get used to the idea and stop questioning as if they have forgotten the initial bizarreness.

There are stories where people began corrupting by misusing bio-technology before the fall of Atlantis, and I wonder if it is any different from it. I know it is a myth, but there is wisdom there even if it is so.  Well, that’s what myths are for, and if we can’t learn from them, that is silly no matter how smart these scientists think they are.

Wisdom is important. Scientists are not philosophers, they focus on mechanisms and are usually not interested in ethical sides so much. They are experts in a specific field and they don’t have time for gaining broader knowledge.

In bio-harmonizing, I would like to value ancient wisdom because of it. It stops us from going out of control. The balance between modern science and ancient wisdom is critical.

Today, I would like to share with you another wisdom called Ichibutsu Zentai Shoku. It also comes from Zen Shojin Diet.

It means to eat food as a whole. When you eat rice, it is better to eat brown rice because it is in its original form and is in the most balanced state. When you eat bread, it is preferable to eat whole wheat bread to white bread. When you eat fish, it is more advisable to eat small fish because you can eat the whole thing instead of eating just one part of a large fish. When you eat a vegetable like a carrot, it is more nutritious to eat the whole carrot without peeling the skin because the skin contains much of the dietary fiber, and it is a waste to throw it away.

Like Shindofuji, it isn’t just know-how, it has a deeper philosophical meaning. Eating means you are taking another life, whether it is a plant or animal you are receiving another life form, and you don’t want to waste it to pay respect. Once you are killing a life, you want to make the best out of it by receiving the whole elements.

This is another reason that I am not keen on the idea of relying on supplements.

Three Reasons Why I Don’t Take Supplements like NMN or Resveratrol

To make a supplement, you are taking one nutrient out of a plant or animal, and not consuming them as the whole thing. It makes a lot of difference. Nutritional-wise, you are breaking the nutritional balance in a plant by extracting just one, and what happens energetically? or Ki of the plant. Well, of course, scientists don’t believe in Ki energy, so I’m sure that is the last thing they are concerned about. But you might care about Ki energy, then what do you think it will do to the plant? What happens to the rest of the plant? Do they eat it at the supplement factory?

As I repeatedly said I am not against supplements, they have their place if used moderately. But the way many people use supplements seems over the top. Some people take 10 supplements a day. If there is no alternative, I understand, but there are alternatives. You can do intermittent fasting and exercises to activate autophagy or a function of a sirtuin.  There are plenty of foods that can help your mitochondria.

There are natural alternatives.

Science looks at the mechanism and might say that you can get the same result by taking a pill without doing all the hard work, but ancient wisdom looks at the whole picture and tells you the effect on your body, mind, and spirit, as well as the plant world, animal kingdom, and the entire planet.

And it encourages you to use a natural way.

The concept of Ichibutsu Zentai Shoku is helpful from the viewpoint of gut health, too. Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, the author of Fiber Fueled says you need about 30 different kinds of fiber to feed your diverse gut microbiomes. If you try to gain nutrients from foods, you need to eat a whole bunch of them to get a sufficient amount. You need to eat a wide variety of foods to gain synergetic effects of different nutrients. That forces you to eat diverse fiber, and it will naturally put your gut microbiota in a good state.

In the Ikigai Diet, I give you a guideline called Ma Go Wa Ya Sa Shi I to absorb diverse fiber.
