How to Lead a Long and Healthy Life Starting in Your 50s

Are you familiar with a concept of 100 year-life? It was introduced by Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott in their book The 100-Year Life – Living and Working in an Age of Longevity.

According to them, we are entering the age of longevity when many of us will be living until 100 years old. Our life expectancy is growing year by year. If you are 60 years old now, you have a 50% chance of living until 90 or more, and if you are 40 years old, you have a 50% chance of reaching 95, and if you are 20 years old, you have a 50% chance of living to more than 100.

That means if you are in your 50s, you may be living until somewhere between 90 to 95.

That is surprising because when we were children we thought we would live until our 70s and if we are lucky we might make it to 80s.  At least, 10 years longer than we expected. I suppose we can imagine that now considering the fact that our parents are still around in their 80s.

But what a lot of us don’t realize is that we will need to be working until 70 or 80. We won’t be able to support ourselves financially otherwise. That means we will need to stay healthy for a long time.

If you are in your 50s like me, we are actually a significant generation because we are the last generation of the baby boomers who were born between 1946 and 1964. We have the longest life expectancy among the baby boomers and we have a bigger population than generations to follow.

Another word, we are the first people to experience the age of longevity.

So how we manage will be followed by the generations to come. It is exciting, isn’t it? We want to make it as fun as possible and we can do it since we are the generation of people who enjoyed our youth and have kept the youthful culture until today.

Luckily, 80’s music has a come back now with a film like Bohemian Rapsody. It can remind ourselves of our good old days, which will help us stay young mentally.

Anyway, in this new blog series, I will share with you cutting edge methods to stay healthy and happy. I have already dealt with this topic in my other blog Omi-merchant’s way of Sustainable Prosperity, but rewriting it here adding some new features since my knowledge is upgrading day by day.
